Japan

68 works

My other home, and the place I keep coming back to.

Japan is everything all at once to me. The first cherry blossoms of spring, Mt Fuji in a hundred different moods, neon city nights, and quiet, snow-softened winters.

Easily my favourite and most-shot country, and the collection I add to most.

A Kyoto Portrait

A Kyoto Portrait

One figure, one perfect fall of light, in the streets of Kyoto. Probably my favourite shot I've ever taken. It is a frame that will never exist again, one exact second where everything lined up. On a wall it carries real presence, quiet, cinematic, and unmistakably Japan. A piece for people who love street photography at its most patient.

Waiting

Waiting

A quiet moment of play, somewhere in the middle of nowhere, Japan. The in-between moments are so often my favourite ones to shoot. This is one of those frames that feels found rather than made, small, human, and warm. It brings a sense of story to a wall, the kind of picture guests lean in to look at twice.

Everyday In Tokyo

Everyday In Tokyo

An ordinary, everyday moment in Tokyo, the kind that somehow feels cinematic here. Nothing staged, nothing waiting to happen, just the city moving the way it always does. For anyone who has walked those streets, this is the memory itself. For everyone else, it is an open window onto them. It hangs well anywhere you want a sense of place.

Mt Fuji Honcho Street

Mt Fuji Honcho Street

Honcho Street, with Mt Fuji filling the sky at the end of it. My first image of this street went viral almost ten years ago, and the view is still as beautiful today as it was then. Power lines, shopfronts, and an entire mountain stacked into one everyday street. It is the collision of ordinary and extraordinary that makes Japan feel like nowhere else.

Above The Clouds

Above The Clouds

Mt Fuji floating on a sea of cloud. Mornings like this feel less like photography and more like luck, the scene practically shoots itself. Not pictured: me and my friends absolutely frozen below the cloud line. Worth it. The mountain becomes an island in the sky. A serene, majestic print, and a natural statement piece at larger sizes.

Mono no Aware

Mono no Aware

Mono no aware, that bittersweet awareness that nothing beautiful lasts, so you enjoy it while you have it. This frame is that idea made visible, the one fully intact blossom amongst a sea of fallen petals, every one of them fleeting. It is a gentle, thoughtful piece to live with, a daily reminder to notice things while they're here. It suits bedrooms and quiet rooms especially well. It's the one I personally have in my own bedroom.

Floating

Floating

Ōuo-jinja has a set of torii gates that float on the water, caught in gentle overcast light in rural Japan. Nothing is happening here, and that is exactly the point. The soft reflections and unhurried mood give it a meditative quality that settles a space. It suits rooms built for winding down, and it rewards a long look.

Serenity

Still water, soft light, and a scene that asks nothing of you. This is Japan at its quietest, the version of the country that stays with you long after the crowds fade from memory. It brings that same hush into a room. Hang it somewhere you go to slow down, a bedroom, a reading corner, the end of a hallway, and let it do its work.

Gate To Mt Fuji

A torii above the clouds with Mt Fuji rising beyond it, the viral shot that made this location famous.
