A quiet moment of play, somewhere in the middle of nowhere, Japan. The in-between moments are so often my favourite ones to shoot. This is one of those frames that feels found rather than made, small, human, and warm. It brings a sense of story to a wall, the kind of picture guests lean in to look at twice.

Honcho Street, with Mt Fuji filling the sky at the end of it. My first image of this street went viral almost ten years ago, and the view is still as beautiful today as it was then. Power lines, shopfronts, and an entire mountain stacked into one everyday street. It is the collision of ordinary and extraordinary that makes Japan feel like nowhere else.

Mono no aware, that bittersweet awareness that nothing beautiful lasts, so you enjoy it while you have it. This frame is that idea made visible, the one fully intact blossom amongst a sea of fallen petals, every one of them fleeting. Tokyo from above at the exact minute the city turns electric. One of my most viral images, and one of my favourites I've ever taken in Japan. Billboards, towers, and ten thousand lives moving at once, held perfectly still. It is a print with genuine energy, big, detailed, and made for a statement wall.

Ōuo-jinja has a set of torii gates that float on the water, caught in gentle overcast light in rural Japan. Nothing is happening here, and that is exactly the point. The most perfect hydrangea I've ever photographed. Japan has flowers for every season and I love capturing them all, and in summer it is the ajisai that owns the country, whole hillsides of blue and purple in the rain season. First light touching Tokyo Skytree, the tallest tower in the world, before the city below has fully woken. Dawn takes the structure floor by floor. It is the newest icon of Japan at its calmest hour. A peninsula in the middle of nowhere on Amami Ōshima, a tiny island where the East China Sea meets the Philippine Sea. Most people will never go there, which is part of what this frame holds, a genuinely remote edge of Japan. Green land running out into two seas at once. What it feels like to cross Tokyo's Rainbow Bridge on a driverless train, the city smearing into pure light and motion. This frame won the Abstract category at the Sony Alpha Awards in 2017. One of the highest torii gates in all of Japan, standing at the summit of Mt Fuji. I've been lucky enough to climb to it three times, and every sunrise up there made the hike worth it. This was one of those mornings. A gate at the top of the country, first light arriving through it. A print with genuine altitude, in every sense.

Snow-covered cedars rising far overhead, the kind of trees that make you feel appropriately small. Walking this path, the silence was the most deafening thing. The endless vermillion torii gates of Kyoto, receding until they blur into a single glow of red. Walk through them and time seems to stop. A home deep in the Japanese winter, where fresh snow rounds off every edge and the whole world goes quiet. You can almost hear how little sound there is. I'm always chasing this kind of quiet, and this is one of the few times I truly found it. On a wall it reads as pure calm, the sort of scene that makes a room feel warmer by contrast.
