Japan
The place I keep coming back to. Japan is everything at once — the first cherry blossoms of spring, Mt Fuji in a hundred different moods, neon Tokyo nights, and quiet, snow-softened winters. Easily my most-shot country, and the collection I add to most.
A Kyoto Portrait
Probably my favourite shot I've ever taken, and one of the reasons why I love Street Photography. When opportunity meets preparedness, you might be able to capture a frame that will never exist ever again.
Waiting
A quiet moment of play, waiting somewhere in the middle of nowhere Japan. The in-between moments are so often my favourite ones to shoot.
Everyday In Tokyo
Just an ordinary, everyday moment in Tokyo. Somehow even the mundane feels cinematic here.
Mt Fuji Honcho Street
My first image of this street went insanely viral almost 10 years ago. Since then, this location has turned into a monster of tourism, but for good reason. It's still as pretty today as it was back then.
Above The Clouds
Mt Fuji floating on a sea of cloud. Mornings like this feel less like photography and more like luck. The scene just shoots itself.
Not pictured: Me and my friends absolutely frozen to death below the clouds. Worth it though.
Mono no Aware
Mono no aware (もののあわれ) — that bittersweet realisation that nothing beautiful ever lasts, so enjoy it while you have it.
Mt Fuji Shinkansen
Mt Fuji and a bullet train — two of Japan's icons in a single frame. A classic.
A Tokyo Minute
One of my most viral images of Tokyo. Shot from the Mag Park viewpoint, this is one of my favourite images in Japan I've taken.
Osaka Castle Bloom
Osaka Castle framed by a full flush of cherry blossom. Spring turns the whole city into a postcard, and this is about as peak as it gets.
Floating
A gentle, afternoon scene at a shrine in the middle of nowhere, Japan.
Serenity
Pure serenity, Japanese style. Some places just quietly ask you to slow right down.
Skytree In Spring
Tokyo's tallest, wrapped in its softest. Spring is everywhere — even 634 metres up.
Gate To Mt Fuji
A torii above the clouds, and Fuji rising beyond it.
The viral shot that popularised this location. Unfortunately it now no longer looks like this and is a bit of a tourist trap, but the moment was still amazing while it lasted.
Sakura
The season's very first cherry blossom, and the most perfect shape.
Higanbana
In Japan, the Higanbana (Red spider lily) is the symbol of death and the afterlife. It's a gorgeous flower and this was the most perfect one I found in the sea of its 4,999,999+ other siblings.
Ajisai
Japan has many different flowers in different seasons, and I love capturing them all. In summer, that's the hydrangea, and this is the most perfect hydrangea photo I've ever taken.
Crossing
A stripe of light, a stretch of dark, and one silhouette between them. Classic Tokyo.
Freedom
Winter has a way of making solitude look like freedom.
Torii At Dusk
One of the largest floating torii in Japan, at one of the most famous locations in Japan.
Hie
Vermillion gates stacked into a staircase of light. Every step feels like passing through someone's story.
Nomimono
A blizzard, a glow, and a row of drinks that never sleep. It doesn't matter where you are or how hard you have it; in Japan, you can get drinks anywhere.
Winter Shrine
Snow on sacred rocks, a torii holding its ground against the white. Winter and the snow strips everything back to what matters.
Afternoon Kimono
A Maiko and her assistant walk through the narrrow alleys of Gion in Kyoto.
Quiet Corner
Kyoto keeps its most interesting of moments in the most quiet of corners.
Castle Reflections
A castle reflection that is 430 years old. The crow castle is the oldest original surviving castle of its kind in all of Japan.
Skytreet Sunrise
First light touching the tallest tower in the world.
Ten Thousand Gates
The classic tunnel of vermillion with the priest walking through, on the way to his daily rounds.
Across The Water
A torii at the shoreline, Fuji on the horizon, and ducks minding their own business. Everything in its place.
City business
Osaka's grids on full show here. Somewhere in the backstreets of the city.
Lakeside
Red maples, blue boats, and Mt Fuji keeping watch across the water. This is one of the few places I always return to every single year because it's always different every time.
Snow Grid
A village under fresh snow, straight down. Winter turns rooftops into graph paper.
The Lone Sakura
One tree, one hillside, one week of glory. Sometimes spring only needs a single voice.
Weeping Blossom
An old street under a weeping cherry, quiet enough to hear the petals land. Mornings like this are why you wake up early in Japan.
Well, they were before this place became so famous there are crowds hours before the sun rises here now. Also unfortunately, this tree was so old it actually fell down in 2024, trapping a tourist. The tourist is okay, but the tree is no longer around, sadly.
Buddha In Bloom
A quiet face among the petals. Serenity, surrounded by spring.
Spring Canal
A boat drifting under a spill of blossoms, perfectly framed. The slowest way to see spring, but the moment for us is gone in an instant.
Sacred Falls
A pagoda and a waterfall sharing the same frame, the way they have for centuries. Some views feel borrowed from another time, especially this one at Nachi Falls.
Autumn Swan
Red reflections, still water, and one elegant silhouette. Autumn in Japan knows how to compose itself.
Autumn Walk
Golden leaves overhead, a quiet path ahead, and small steps keeping pace. Autumn slows everyone down in the best way.
Temple In Bloom
A temple courtyard in full spring bloom. For one week a year, everything old becomes new again.
Beneath The Blossoms
Standing under a canopy of pink with Mt Fuji looking on. This is the Japan people dream about, and sometimes, it's real.
Moon Fuji
The moon sets during the day atop Mt Fuji. I remember I had to get in such an awkward position (near a river) to frame this up the way it is. I hope it was worth it.
Wedded
The wedded rocks of Meoto Iwa. A classic shot of one of the styles I love shooting and editing.
Pagoda Silhouette
A silhouette that could only be Japan. Dusk does the rest.
The Storm
Golden light Mt Fuji with a warning attached. Watching this roll in was equal parts mesmerising and humbling.
Path To Heaven
Three torii standing at high tide. A well-defined path during low tide, but when the tide comes in, it transforms into something else completely.
Golden river
A river catching sunset and cutting the city in two. I just love how perfectly nature makes its curves.
Maiko's Shadow
A flash of luck as I caught a Maiko (Geisha in training) walking down the streets of Gion. Not many people get to see Maiko walking in the wild, and over my long career I've been fortunate enough to be around these areas enough to see many of them, but this shot is one of my favourites. I just love the way the shadows fall on this one.
Dusk Fuji
Dusk haze, clear water, and Mt Fuji holding the horizon. I snapped this on a whim while on a job shooting something else, but it ended up being one of my favourite photos from that year.
Tokyo After Dark
The city switching on, building by building, light by light. Tokyo never sleeps, it just glows at night.
Land Trail
A scene from the middle of nowhere, in a place most people will likely never go.
This was shot where the East China Sea and Philippine Sea meet, on a tiny island called Amami Ōshima.
Hidden
Autumn leaves doing their best to steal the scene from Mt Fuji.
Warp Speed
What it feels like to go through Rainbow Bridge in Tokyo on a driverless train. This shot was awarded as the winner of the Sony Alpha Awards in 2017 for the Abstract category.
Under The Tracks
Signpost light, smoke, and the smell of food after work. This is a deep side of Tokyo that I'm always intrigued by. Unfortunately this shot will never be repeated, as this alleyway now no longer exists.
Gate To The Heavens
One of the higest torii gates in all of Japan, sitting at the top of Mt Fuji. I've been lucky enough to climb it 3 times, and everytime the sunrise always gave me something to make the hike worth it. This was one of those times.
The Boatman
A quiet moment through the Katsura river and a frame-perfect shot of the boatman's daily routine.
Curiosity
When he grows up, I hope he'll come to appreciate just how much beauty surrounded him.
Sakura River
A slow river doing its best to hold a reflection of spring. Some scenes don't need anything more.
Among Giants
Snow-covered cedars that make you feel appropriately small. When we were walking through this path, the silence was the most deafening thing.
Mt Fuji In Bloom
Mt Fuji, framed by a week of sakura that never lasts long enough. Spring in Japan is a fleeting thing, and this is what it feels like to catch it in its full glory.
Heart Fuji
Mt Fuji wrapped in an autumn heart. One of my favourite subjects to shoot and I was so lucky to be the first one to find this composition on this year.
The Postcard
The postcard shot — pagoda, blossom, and Fuji all lined up. A cliché, sure, but one you have to shoot at least once. I've shot it in every single season in every single condition, but this one is my favourite.
Blossom River
Mt Fuji has a thousand different faces, and this is one of my favourites — blossom out front, mountain behind.
Kofun
The Cherry Blossom—a metaphor for life and death. A perfect symbol for the buried here.
Vermillion
The endless vermillion torii gates of Kyoto. You walk through them and time just sort of stops.
Colors of Tokyo
Tokyo stacked up in colour — signs, walls, windows, all of it. This city never once runs out of things to look at.
Winter home
Deep in a Japanese winter, where the snow softens every edge. This is the kind of quiet I'm always chasing.
